Discovering Vector Tools

My uncle Jean (John) is starting a "repair all" kind of company in the south of France. He wanted a logo of a "happy and honest" worker. I thought it was a good opportunity to try something new to me: vectors! It's not done in Illustrator but using the vector tool in Photoshop. But hey, it's a start! Next time, I try Illustrator.
I also try to put a little bit of my uncle into the design. I think it turned out okay for the short time I spent on it.

BOLT!

Bolt is now playing in theaters everywhere. I worked on the game quite a bit. For this game, I didn't work so much in concept but on the skydomes, these big background paintings that "close" the gameplay area.
Here is one of the few concept pieces I did, for an enemy. At the time, the bad guys of the movie had this modern ninja flavor to them. Later on, the movie team just kept the high tech look and abandonned the ninja theme. We of course had to change our characters accordingly.

I've been pretty impressed with what Disney Feature did on Bolt. It's definetely a step up in quality and storytelling compared to Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons.

Here are early ninja versions of "Disky":

" I'm on the cover of a MAGAZIIINE !!! "

Clearly one of my favorite Pixar jokes: " I'm on the cover of a MAGAZINE !!!" says Mike Wazowski in Monsters Inc., looking at his face hindered by a barcode on a magazine cover.
Well, I didn't make it to the cover, but I have a page displaying my art in the November 2008 issue of Imagine FX (issue #36 - page 12)!

This is a great magazine about digital art.
Check it out!

Goods and Services

A couple of weeks ago, I helped my good friend Ben Simonsen to finish a few illustrations for a weekly paper in Reno called 'Reno News & Review'. This was for their 'Best of Edition' which focused on things to do in Reno with such topics as 'Night Life, Green, Kids & Family, Fun & Gaming, Personalities, The Outdoors, Dining, etc.'
Ben gave me his sketches, I rendered them and he applied some color layers on top to finish them. That was a fun collaboration! Here is the first one (out of four).

Robert the Thief and Sebastien the busy/happy man

One of the reason why I don't post as often as I used to lately is because I'm teaching a class of Computer Illustration at Salt Lake Community College on top of my full time work at Disney, my freelance work, my new graphic novel project (see above) and... and it keeps going on and on!
But I'm not complaining! I'm having a lot of fun doing all these things and feel pretty lucky to live of my art.
Thank you so much for all your comments and support. I wish I had time to answer all of you personnaly.
Here is a quick demo I painted for my class this morning: Robert The Thief.

Take care everybody!

Seb

Sci-Fi

Here are the first sketches for the Main Character of a new Graphic Novel I'm working on. It's been a while since I wanted to try a sci-fi story. I never did it before. It's going to be interesting. The story is shaping up nicely. I'll keep you posted!

Oldies

That's annoying! Everything I'm working on these days, at work or outside of work is top secret!
But I started a graphic novel I'm pretty excited about a couple of weeks ago. I'll probably post the first character and environment studies for it here soon!
Have a good one,

Seb

The Tower

Man! It's been a while! Sorry everyone for the lack of post. A few months ago, Avalanche gave me the chance of being Concept Lead on our new big project. It's an honor and a big responsability. I don't have much time for my own projects on the side anymore. But I managed to finish "The Tower", a 4 pages Graphic Novel that I started a while back. Here is one of the panel. When it will get published, I will post it here... and in english too! :)

See you soon everybody! I'm gonna try to post more often again.

Vacation

Hello friends,

Sorry for the lack of communication. I came back to France at the start of the month for some vacation. I thought I'll have time to paint and draw but I was wrong! :)
So I probably won't post until the start of next month.

Anyway, I hope everybody is doing fine,

See you soon,

Seb

Rhino Sketche

I don't have much time to blog lately, sorry guys. I'll get back to it soon. I have a few nice illustrations on the way.
Here is a little sketche in the mid time, just for fun. That represents how tired I am lately! :)

Oh feedback, great feedback!

Here is a new version of the Gangster. I changed the shadow, the tommy gun and the left hand. Thanks to Reed Hawker, Adam Ford, Dave Malan and David Bybee for the feedback!
I think feedback is one of the coolest thing about blogs. I encourage every visitors on this blog to give me some. Don't be afraid to do it even if you don't know me or if you feel like you're not good enough to do it. Even if you don't draw and paint, you can still give great feedback. For example, it didn't take any art background to my good friend David Bybee to notice that the tommy gun on this picture was all wrong!! :) (I drew it in the car without reference)
Take it easy everyone,

Seb

One Hour Study

Thank you very much to everyone for your support and feedback. I'll probably go back to the Gangster illustration to change a few things. In the mid time, here is another lunch study. This one was very hard to paint: the color pallet is so different that what I'm use to and the values were really hard to get. I'm pretty satisfied with the result though.

New Painting Exercise

Hello everybody,

I don't have a lot of time for my blog lately. But a lot of cool things are on the way! Here is the new excercise my buddies at Avalanche and I started during our lunch break: copying a painting in an hour (no color picking allowed).

Fun, fun!

We started with a painting of one of my favorite painter Alex Kanevsky

Here is the original by Monsieur Kanevsky:

And here is mine:

I didn't care much about the drawing. I tried to concentrate on colors and values instead.

Malibu

Well, I don't have much to post lately! Everything I'm working on at work or outside of work is confidential. :( I'll be able to show all of that in the near futur. So in the mid time, here is another skydome I made for the final level of Hannah Montana.

The Tower - Update

Quick update on "The Tower", a four pages Graphic Novel I'm working on with Sébastien Hostaléry (the talented french writer!)
I'm done with the first 2 pages and I'm currently working on the drawing of page 03.
Here are the first three pictures of page 02.

Portraits

Back to blogging after a great, long and restful Christmas break. I hope yours was as good as mine!
This year, I wanted to give a more original present than usual to my wife Tanya. So I made her a portrait of our little boy, Thomas, 18 months and a portrait of her in a 1920's setting. I didn't have time to finish hers for Christmas but here it is, still unfinished. I really enjoyed making these portraits and I thought I could make them for people out there. I could put any settings you want or extra props etc... just to make it more personal and original. I don't know how much I'll charge yet but I'll think about it.
So if you are interested, let me know: sgallegopub@yahoo.fr

Happy New Year everybody!!

Seb
